We were watching the end of a cheesy Christmas Movie last night as a family, and it was ending with a gaudy Christmas Musical. Children were dancing in ridiculously elaborate costumes that were made to look homemade, with props and over produced instrumental accompaniment. Families of actors were in the audience loudly talking and crying, standing up and clapping, surrounded by crowds of extras that stared on calmly as if nothing were going on beside them. The saccharine sweet hallmarks of made for TV Christmas movies.

I turned to Clara, who was sitting on the side of my arm chair and leaning her head on my shoulder. “Clara, what do you think the world would be like if things actually happened this way?”

She thought for only a few seconds. “Garbage probably.”

I wiped a quiet tear from my eye and smiled down at her. My little girl was growing up so fast.
