Gideon held up two items, one in each fist, and hopped down the stairs. “Dad, I bet you can’t guess which one of these things is actually bigger.”

I glanced up from what I was working on. I couldn’t make out what he was holding, so I closed my eyes and made a guess. “Um, okay. I think the smaller one is actually bigger.”

The boy recoiled in shock. “How did you know that?” He frowned and looked at his hands. “I didn’t even show them to you yet!”

I shrugged. “I have been around a long time, I guess.” I went back to what I was doing.

The boy turned and walked slowly back up the steps, murmuring under his breath, “But how did he know that?”
