My son placed something on the counter and then turned to me. “Dad! I need you to keep very good care of this, okay? It’s very special to me.”
I looked over his explosion of hair and all I saw was an empty plastic baggie.
“Gideon, that’s… Why is that special to you?”
He grinned. “It’s my special rock collection.”
I reached over him and held it in the air. “There are no rocks in this.”
He audibly rolled his eyes, “Dad, I know that. But it’s GOING to have my special rock collection!”
“When, though?”
He shrugged, “Someday. I don’t know yet. It’s too cold to look for rocks today.”
We stared at each other for a few seconds and then he turned and walked away.
I looked back at the counter and the empty baggie. My little boy was growing up. I thought only adults asked people to watch empty bank accounts for them.
