A thought suddenly occurred to me this morning and I turned to Lydia who was sitting on the couch drawing a picture of jellyfish with a pile of colored pencils.

“Lydia?” I said.

She looked up and smiled.

“Lydia, do you have any enemies?”

She looked confused.

“Like, I know you have lots of friends. But is there anyone you would consider an enemy? Like, love your enemies and such. Who are we talking about there?”

She shrugged as if the question was nonsense. “Um, Dad,” she shook her head and waved a pink pencil at me like a wand. “I don’t have any enemies. I’m homeschooled, remember?”

She immediately went back to her drawing.

I nodded. “Oh, that’s right,” I said. “I forgot. … Good.”
